Many of the cutbacks announced in the 2026-27 budget seemed to be targeting the next generation of Islanders, particularly in the area of education and literacy.

The one that captured the most attention (although it was hastily reversed) was the end of the Imagination Library, a program that sees books sent to preschool-age children every month. Whether you are talking the savings potential (the $400,000 cost is essentially equivalent to an accounting error when you are talking a $3.8-billion budget) or the optics of denying books to children, this was simply an inept political move. The fact they were essentially shamed into changing their mind doesn’t alter that fact.
Funding was also cut for pedagogical support staff in early childhood centres by 25 per cent, a measure Education and Early Years........
