ANDY WALKER: New potato rules thankfully devoid of protectionist rhetoric

While new rules being imposed by the United States on P.E.I.’s No. 1 cash crop in the wake of another case of potato wart being discovered this summer will add another level of regulation for growers, the decision appears to be devoid of the rhetoric that could have been perhaps been expected given the current trade war between the two countries.

During the 22 plus years I was editor of the Island Farmer, I wrote more stories on potato wart than any other topic. It proved to be a bookend for my career — the first cases of wart that led the Americans to close the border for six months in late 2000 and early 2001 happened within weeks of me taking over.

While there were some additional findings of the disease following the establishment of a protocol by the two countries, they didn’t lead to any further measures as........
