A moment of grace at council

There was a moment of grace at city council the other night. It is worth mentioning because such moments are increasingly rare anywhere in politics.

The issue at hand was a report clarifying the maintenance of the child care subsidy for legally striking workers. At the previous week’s general committee meeting, Coun. Joy Lachica had moved a motion to expedite a review of the city’s policy after a lawfully striking OPSEU worker had initially been refused the subsidy — an action the city quickly walked back.

Coun. Matt Crowley had collaborated with Lachica on the issue but couldn’t make the general committee meeting. Lachica agreed to deal with it there, where it passed 8-2

At the subsequent council meeting, Crowley immediately raised his hand to move the motion.

Shortly after, he asked to speak.
