As summer comes to a close it’s time to turn your attention to preparing for all those changes that September will impose on you. For students and parents this may involve the purchase of a new computer, and the back-to-school sales may also lure many others into replacing an old laptop or desktop computer.

It’s always a bit exciting to get a new, spectacularly speedy, computer but the one downside is getting it ready to do its work. Many of the basic settings and your personal files can be transferred to the new device but most of the essential apps or programs must be installed from scratch. An important consideration when setting up a new computer is deciding what are essential programs and, given the high prices of computers, how to get them for free or as little as possible. 

Probably the most important program to be installed first on a new Windows computer is an anti-virus suite to thwart an army of charlatans out there with the one goal of compromising as many computers as possible with malware, ransomware, worms, and spyware.
