When Kawartha Potters Guild member Lucia McHardy was in high school, a potter came to her art class and introduced the students to creating sculptures with clay.

“I found the feel of the clay and the freedom of it wonderful,” says McHardy. “Later I took a night school clay class with Ron Roy, who was an encouraging and inspiring teacher. When I went off to the Sheridan College School of Design, I did a minor in clay. After I graduated, I worked in the map-making department of an engineering firm. Later I became a colourist in a large wallpaper company. Both of these jobs taught me the importance of a good line and colour balance which I still incorporate in my pottery-making today.”

Also during that time, McHardy ran a pottery group for kids at some Children’s Aid residences.
