People often ask me where we see all the wild creatures that we photograph, expecting to hear that we hike into the remotest locations deep in the woods, but the truth is, most of the animals we photograph live right here among us.

They hide out along the edges of waterways and lakes and in the hedgerows of farm fields or along the edges of the forests. Many of them even live right in or very near the cities and towns of the Kawartha Lakes.

For example, the other day we were driving a back road only a few kilometres from home when we came across a broad-winged hawk hunting in a ditch alongside a farmer’s field. At this time of year, as the fall migration begins, many of the hawks are on the move. We don’t usually see too many broad-winged hawks in this area........
