From den to departure: Watching a fox family’s first months

Who doesn’t love to see a beautiful red fox out in nature?

I suppose if I asked a chicken farmer I might get a different response, but most of us are thrilled to see one of these sly creatures.

Foxes are one of the animals that has adapted very well to human development and they have learned to live in close proximity to us and even use us. We humans produce a lot of waste, much of it perfectly good food and foxes are only too happy to clean up our spoils.

They also use us for protection. They have learned that if they have their den close to us, the young ones are safer because many of their predators like coyotes and wolves are not comfortable coming in so close to humans.

In early May, the young fox kits made their first appearance.
