Deep pockets at NCAA schools could be problematic for OHL
The landscape encompassing OHL and NCAA hockey players dramatically changed during the 2024-25 hockey season.
In the past, if a player elected to play major junior hockey they were ineligible to play in the NCAA.
Players would regularly depart OHL training camps prior to the 48 hour rule expiring. If a player spent more than 48 hours at a training camp, or suited up in a single OHL exhibition game, they forfeited their chances at a potential scholarship with an American school.
We witnessed players loaded with potential plying their trade in the provincial junior-A ranks, before taking their talents south of the border.
The OHL benefited from the ruling last season, as fans witnessed players unexpectedly join their favourite organizations. These players never would have stepped onto an OHL ice surface, if it resulted in their NCAA commitments being terminated.
