United Church goers gather for anniversary celebration
Northminster United Church hosted 15 United Churches from around the city and area on June 8 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the United Church of Canada as a denomination.
More than 500 people gathered, including a 100-plus-voice choir. The event honoured the 100th Anniversary theme of Deep Spirituality, Bold Discipleship, and Daring Justice.
Attendees “sang, prayed and praised together, reflecting on past achievements and mistakes, acknowledging the chaotic present, and looking forward to the future with all it may offer in the next 100 years,” said Rev. Kevin Derry, minister of Northminster.
The celebration also included children’s activities on the far back lawn. The Lion’s Club had barbecue available while others brought their own picnic lunch as they gathered on the east lawn to share a meal, laughter and conversation.
Northminster United Church is located at 300 Sunset Blvd. Worship takes place Sundays at 10 a.m. For Sunday services, enter through the doors facing Sunset Boulevard or the red doors........
