H.O.P.E. Bursary deadline
Applications for the H.O.P.E. Bursary are due May 1 at 11:59 p.m. The H.O.P.E. Bursary, in honour of Steve Montador, was established to support students transitioning from high school to post-secondary that are suffering the long-term effects of a sports-related concussion and require a reduced academic course load.
All applicants will be reviewed by a committee consisting of members of H.O.P.E., and GPHSF, Your Family Health Team Foundation. They will be notified of their status by May 20.
To be considered for the Bursary you must be:
A student at a Peterborough city/county-based high school and registered in a first-year program at college or university.
Suffering from post-concussion syndrome sustained from a sports-related injury.
Be in satisfactory academic standing.
Steve Montador was an NHL defenceman, Peterborough Pete, and a H.O.P.E. board member and supporter who suffered concussions playing hockey. His last concussion ended his career when playing in the NHL for Chicago.
“He was very vocal about his struggles and depression following his concussion and vowed to be a voice and advocate. After passing away suddenly at the age of 35 at his home in Mississauga, his friends and fellow board members in H.O.P.E. established this bursary to support student athletes who are suffering the long-term effects of concussion related injury while trying to transition to college or university,” reads a press release for the bursary.
Montador’s story is also the subject of Ken Dryden’s book “Game Change: The life and death of Steve Montador and the future of hockey” (2017).
