Monsoon season: Staying healthy during July’s rains

JULY is synonymous with the monsoon season in Pakistan. The rains bring welcome relief from the scorching summer heat, replenish reservoirs, support agriculture and contribute significantly to the country’s economy. Yet, the same rains also create conditions that favour the spread of infectious diseases and increase the risk of injuries and environmental hazards. As communities across the country experience heavy rainfall, it is important to recognize the health challenges associated with the monsoon and adopt preventive measures to safeguard individuals and families.

One of the greatest public health concerns during the rainy season is the rise in waterborne diseases. Flooding and poor drainage can contaminate drinking water, causing illnesses such as diarrhea, cholera, typhoid and hepatitis A and E. Young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable. Safe drinking water is essential and water should be boiled or treated if contamination is suspected.........
