Death is a natural result of road mayhem

Brooklyn: It’s sad but not surprising that three young men, Abdul Rehman, Konstantin Gerantidi and Huzayfah Aziz Algahiem, lost their lives early Wednesday morning in a crash on the eastbound Belt Parkway. As one who lives within earshot of traffic on the Belt, I’m sad to say that it’s even more surprising that fatal crashes don’t happen every night on that road.

The stretch between Exit 3 (Verrazzano Bridge) and Exit 1 (65th St.) turns into a de facto racetrack each night beginning as early as 9 p.m. and continuing for hours. Screaming engines fill the air in both directions. And the spillover vehicles use the adjacent Shore Rd. as practice grounds. We never hear sirens of police trying to gain some control. Perhaps it’s because they don’t want the criticism that pursuing the speeders will cause them to go faster, risking fatalities. I can understand that, but it creates the impression that no one cares about the speeders’ behavior. Or maybe the city’s overall attitude toward bad driving is at fault. Over the past few years, motorcycles masquerading as scooters are driven recklessly in the name of food delivery.

Like everyone else, I’m sorry that the young men who died in that violent crash will never be able to raise a family, realize their dreams and contribute to society. But without some restoration of sanity to the roads, they likely won’t be the last.
