The GOP’s dismantling of America’s core

Glendale, Calif.: Congressional Republicans have repeatedly failed a simple test: Choose between President Trump and the Constitution. It shouldn’t be so hard. After all, senators take an oath to uphold the Constitution. But so did Trump, and we’ve experienced how little it means to this narcissist.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that the Constitution gives him the power to do whatever he wants. That’s dead wrong. Our presidents are not kings. Under our Constitution, no person, including the president, is above the law. Yet, Trump and his chainsaw-wielding sidekick Elon Musk repeatedly broke the law in their zeal to gut federal agencies that serve the American people. Republicans and the Supreme Court take from the poor and give to the rich! Just imagine, Trump and his Republican enablers voting to restrict Americans from voting, or acting illegally to destroy our democracy. They even have the nerve to vote for the The SAVE America Act, which could make voting harder for married women, the elderly, overseas military personnel and those without proper ID, while ending “no-excuse” mail-in voting!

Benjamin Franklin believed that concentrated power in the hands of a few oligarchs could lead to tyranny. He argued that a government should be representative and accountable to the people rather than dominated by an elite class. His writings reflected a commitment to liberty and self-governance, which were foundational to American democracy.
