Veteran of Hungarian Uprising died days after slipping from broken hospital hoist

Istvan Toth - a veteran of the Hungarian Uprising of 1956 - was at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital when the machine stopped working without warning and caused him to slip.

He died four days later, on March 21, 2024, although his inquest at Norfolk Coroner's Court heard the incident did not contribute more than minimally to his death.

However, it did lead the coroner, Yvonne Blake, to order enhanced training for all staff using the equipment after hearing conflicting accounts about what happened.

Mr Toth, of George Elliott Way in Dereham, died from cardiorespiratory failure secondary to ischaemic heart disease, frailty and muscular dystrophy and at the start of the hearing, Ms Blake warned his daughter Erzebet Toth: “Nobody is on trial here and whatever you think about your father’s cause of death, a doctor and a pathologist have agreed the cause of death.”

But Miss Toth remained adamant the hoist incident in March 2024 had caused her father, who was known as Steve, terrible suffering in the final days of his life.

“My dad always told the truth and I have told the truth,” she told the hearing. “Neither of us had any reason to lie.”
