Gill, Shami's magic, Kohli's woes: First impression from India's win in CT 25 opener
New Delhi: Team India began their campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on a resounding note after beating Bangladesh by six wickets in Dubai on Thursday. Ace paceman Mohammed Shami sizzled for the Men in Blue with a fifer on what proved to be a record-breaking day for the veteran player, as he scripted multiple feats in the 50-over format while Shubman Gill proved to be the star in the chase.
Shami, who shined with the ball in the first innings, was ably supported by Harshit Rana (3 wickets) and Axar Patel (2 wickets) who also made significant contributions helping India restrict the Tigers for a moderate total of 228 runs in the Group A match. The chase was all about a masterclass from talented Gill, who smashed a blistering unbeaten century, his eighth in the format, to power India to a victory in 46.3 overs.
While Virat Kohli’s batting woes continued as he could just muster 22 runs in 38 balls, skipper Rohit Sharma (41) and seasoned KL Rahul (41 not out) fought the odds to extend their contribution in the convincing win. Shreyas Iyer failed to showcase his magic in the chase and faltered after scoring 15 runs but at the end, things turned out in India’s favour.
Had it not been for the seasoned pacer’s pitch-perfect bowling, things could have turned in the favour of the opposition.
