US courts halt deportation of Indian-origin man who spent 43 years in jail for wrongful conviction
Two US courts have ordered immigration authorities not to deport Subramanyam “Subu” Vedam, a 64-year-old Indian-origin man who spent over four decades in prison for a murder he did not commit. Vedam’s conviction was overturned earlier this year after fresh evidence emerged.
Vedam, who came to the US from India at just nine months old, grew up in State College, Pennsylvania, where his father was a professor at Penn State University. He was set to walk free from prison on October 3. However, instead of returning home, he was taken into immigration custody by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
