Delhi election campaign concludes, AAP in pole position, but can BJP surge ahead?
Addressing a public meeting with Delhi CM Aitishi Singh in Kalkaji constituency of Delhi on Sunday evening, TMC MP Shatrughan Sinha asserted that instead of a Chunavi rally (poll rally), the crowd present before him already gives the impression of a Vijay Samahron (victory celebration) for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the national capital.
While the politicians are prone to exaggerations, Sinha may just prove right. As the campaign for the February 5 Delhi assembly election draws to a conclusion Monday evening, the ruling AAP looks to be in a pole position and may once again muster enough numbers (majority mark 36 seats – 70 member House) to form the government.
The BJP, which has repeatedly failed to grasp power ever since losing power in 1998, appears to be giving its best possible fight to AAP in recent times and is heading for a very improved performance. It is surely going to return with a substantial gain from its present tally of eight seats. But going by AAP Convener Arvind Kejriwal’s resilience and lack of chief ministerial face for BJP, the saffron party may once again fall short of unseating the AAP.
AAP has been in power for over a decade now and its corruption free governance, innovative health schemes, improved education and schools infrastructure, along with free water, electricity and bus rides (for women) has propelled the party to unprecedented majority in the 2015 (67 seats) and 2020 elections (62).
