Burning Billions: Why the US can’t buy its way out of devastating California wildfires

Wildfire ravaging California is nothing new. The end of the arid Californian summers has been marked by the fires gutting the dry woods. What, however, has become alarming in recent years is the rapidity at which these fires have been moving and the lethality of these infernos. In the last decade, the fire has killed over 150 people, destroyed over 40,000 homes and other buildings, and wiped entire towns out.

No matter what Elon Musk opines and Donald Trump cogitates, climate change is making wildfires worse. Research from Climate Central finds that there are now at least 28 days a year with ideal fire conditions in many places along the East Coast. If you thought this was alarming, wait till you hear the status of the West Coast. While the Pacific Coast has always been more susceptible to wildfires, thanks to its long, hot and very dry summers, things are far worse because of climate change than they were even 50 years ago! Research says that in parts of Texas, Colorado and Southern California, there are now at least 56 more days with ideal fire conditions than there were half a century ago. Data also goes on to say that forest fires are becoming more widespread, burning nearly twice as much tree cover today as they did 20 years ago. Migration has ensured that it is not just limited to the forest cover but is also gutting houses in very urbane pockets of the region. The wildfire is not limited to the wild to the wild anymore. As experts put it, the fire now jumps from house to house just as rapidly as it does from tree to tree.
