Trump-Modi Meeting: It’s deal time

New Delhi: After a relatively fun AI summit in Paris, Prime Minister Narendra Modi heads to the US to confront a determined and combative President Donald Trump. Not a pleasant task, despite the bonhomie Modi shares with Trump. In the three weeks that he’s been back in the White House, President Trump has upended the global order. His tariff threats are aimed at everyone from China to India to Canada to Mexico to Europe. While how much of the higher tariffs end up hurting American consumers and slowing US growth is a moot point, the immediate concern for countries in the crosshairs of Trump 2.0 is to respond to it: either with counter tariffs or with negotiations aimed at addressing President Trump’s concerns.

When it comes to India, Trump’s sore point is the trade surplus of about $37 billion that India enjoys versus the US. It’s safe to say that rather than attempt to explain the complex economics behind it to him, Modi would want to a) give him a patient hearing, and b) assure him that his concerns would be addressed as best as possible. Ideally, Trump would want to come out looking like a winner in this meeting by announcing the concessions India is willing to make.
