Carney or Poilievre, Canada needs a reset with India
New Delhi: Canada’s Liberal Party is experiencing a revival of sorts. It has chosen a hard-nosed economic expert, Mark Carney, as its new leader and hence the Prime Minister-designate to replace Justin Trudeau, who bears much of the blame for Canada’s inflation, housing and immigration woes. Carney has been the central banker in Canada and the UK, and has top-notch Wall Street (he’s a Goldman Sachs alumnus) credentials to boot.
Until January this year, it was the opposition Conservative party, led by Pierre Poilievre, that was expected to sweep the federal election due this year. It’s no longer a given. Recent opinion polls show the Liberals narrowing the gap with the Conservatives, indicating that loyal voters that has switched in disgust are returning to the fold. If Carney calls for a snap election to cash in on the current voter mood, then he is most likely to lead the next government.
The Liberal party has the American President, Donald Trump, to thank for it.
Since taking office on January 20 this year, Trump has stood the US-Canada relations on its head. Trump’s First Buddy, Elon Musk, has ridiculed Trudeau as ‘girl’ and called him Governor, suggesting that Canada is America’s 51st state. Canadians see Trump’s unexpected tariff war as a front for his American expansionism, and not really about curbing flow south of immigrants and drugs. (The next theatre of war is expected to be the mineral-rich Arctic and hence Trump’s interest in Canada and Greenland.)
