PM Modi’s ITER visit highlights India’s clean energy goals with Nuclear power push
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inspect the world’s most advanced fusion energy nuclear reactor at Cadarache in southern France on Wednesday. This project is being run by seven of the most technologically advanced countries of the world and aims to create a miniature sun on Earth. The project is an unprecedented collaboration of seven countries including the US, Russia, South Korea, Japan, China, India and the European Union (EU), all of whom aim to create ‘Aditya on Earth’. ITER, whose full name is International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, has a clear imprint of ‘Made in India’.
India is contributing about Rs 20,000 crore (2.5 billion dollars) to this project and in return will get 100 per cent intellectual property rights. This will pave the way for building fusion energy reactors in India in the future. ITER is the most expensive science and technology experiment ever in which India is a partner.
This project seeks to provide the world with an unlimited supply of clean energy that costs more than 22 billion euros.
India has also contributed the biggest component to the project – the world’s largest refrigerator that houses this unique reactor, built by Larsen & Toubro in Gujarat. According to reports, it weighs over 3,800 tonnes while the total weight of the ITER reactor will be around 28,000 tonnes.
As far as India’s contribution is concerned then it has developed Cryostat a high vacuum pressure chamber made of steel in Surat for this project. This huge refrigerator will help cool the reactor when it generates extreme heat.
It is worth noting here that India’s contribution to this project is 9 per cent, but by providing the cryostat, the country will retain its intellectual property rights.
ITER-India is responsible for the delivery of the following ITER packages that include Cryostat, In-wall Shielding, Cooling Water System, Cryogenic System, Ion-Cyclotron RF Heating System, Electron Cyclotron RF Heating System, Diagnostic Neutral Beam System, Power Supplies and some Diagnostics. Additionally, related R&D and experimental activities are being carried out at the........
