Explained: China mulls appointing North Korean Army veterans to protect its projects in Kabul and Pakistan

North Korean soldiers were deployed by their supreme leader Kim Jong Un to assist his ally Russian President Vladimir Putin in the war against Ukraine. In December last year, more than 11,000 North Korean soldiers were deployed in the Kursk region of Russia to assist the Russian army in thwarting Ukrainian counter-attacks. The North Korean troops have remarkable combat proficiency and unparalleled ideological discipline that has attracted Chinese military experts.

So, now China is mulling to appoint North Korean veterans to man its projects under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in Pakistan and Afghanistan, as they are experts in small arms and ammunition and close combat. According to an intelligence report of the Chinese Army, Beijing wants to secure its ongoing project in Pakistan and Afghanistan with the help of retired or expelled soldiers of North Korea.

Several private security companies in China have already started the recruitment process of former Korean soldiers.
