Explained: AAP-Congress alliance on the brink as Amritsar, Chandigarh mayor posts lost to cross-voting
In a major political upset in the Chandigarh Mayor Elections 2025, the AAP and Congress alliance lost to the BJP due to cross-voting. In the corporation with 35 wards, the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) alliance had the majority for the mayor, but despite this, when the election was held, BJP candidate Harpreet Kaur Babla got 19 votes and Congress-supported AAP candidate Prem Lata got only 17 votes.
BJP had contested the election alone and had fielded Harpreet Kaur Babla for the post; however, during voting, three councillors of Congress and AAP rebelled and did cross-voting, which benefited the BJP and Babla won the mayoral election On the other hand, Congress has won the election for the post of Senior Deputy Mayor. Congress candidate Jasbir Singh Bunty defeated BJP candidate Bimla Dubey. However, cross-voting was witnessed here too and one councillor of AAP and Congress voted for the BJP.
Earlier Leader of Opposition in Punjab Congress MLA Pratap Singh Bajwa had told the party high command that the ruling Aam Aadmi Party had prevented Congress from having a mayor in Amritsar and Phagwara. It is worth mentioning here that despite having 41 councillors in Amritsar, Congress could not make its mayor in the 92-member House and in Phagwara, also 3 councillors of Congress broke away and joined the Aam Aadmi Party.
