Delimitation, Stalin’s new battle against Delhi, real threat or poll rhetoric?

Amid the dispute going on between Tamil Nadu and the Central Government regarding the three-language policy of the new education policy, now Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin has come up with another issue, and that is delimitation. Stalin decided to call an all-party meeting on March 5 to discuss the issue of Lok Sabha delimitation in the state. CM Stalin said that after the delimitation, Tamil Nadu is in danger of losing eight Lok Sabha seats. This is because Tamil Nadu has controlled the population by implementing the family planning programme.

TN CM Stalin said that political parties registered with the Election Commission of India have been invited to the all-party meeting. He appealed to join the meeting unitedly by setting aside political differences. The CM said that in the name of delimitation, a sword is hanging over the southern states. Stalin also claimed that Tamil Nadu controlled the population through the family planning programme and thus had a low population, so there may be a reduction in Lok Sabha seats. He alleged that the state could lose about eight seats, and after this, its representation in the Lok Sabha will be just 31 MPs from the present count of 39 MPs in the Parliament.

Here Stalin is clearly trying to set his political agenda by raising the issue of language and delimitation. He has made a strategy to give more importance to this issue by calling an all-party meeting in March so that more and more parties could jump into the debate on Dravidian politics and how South India’s issues could be put up at the national level.

The delimitation exercise is proposed in 2026, which will be related to the re-determination of Lok Sabha seats and assembly constituencies. The basis........
