Bangladesh on the brink: Delayed polls, student protests, is Yunus losing grip?

Political turmoil has increased once again in Bangladesh as the student agitators who ousted Sheikh Hasina from power on August 5, 2024, are once again showing signs of becoming violent. Six months ago, when student leaders made Muhammad Yunus the head of the interim government after the coup of Sheikh Hasina’s government on 7 August 2024, he had promised democracy, justice and stability.

But today the same student leaders are distancing themselves from him and once again there are signs of political turmoil in Bangladesh. According to reports, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and leaders associated with the student movement are accusing the interim government led by Yunus of postponing the elections.

So much is the dissent that the most prominent face of the Yunus government, IT Minister and former student leader Nahid Islam has announced to resign and withdraw support from the government. Along with him, many other student leaders are also angry with the Yunus government raising questions on the stability of the government and fears of a new phase of political instability in the already unstable country.

The Yunus government is accused of resorting to repression to ensure that it continues in power. His government is also accused of targeting the Awami League supporters by arresting them and instigating violence against them. Recently, the house of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the capital Dhaka was attacked and set on fire, making the atmosphere more tense.

Meanwhile, BNP General Secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has accused the Yunus government of deliberately avoiding elections and called it a conspiracy against democracy. Additionally,........
