AI Needs a Speed Limit, But Who Will Set It?
The world needs common regulation for the most dangerous capabilities, and the rules should apply to everyone. But enforcing US rules on China or vice-versa would be next to impossible.
When Silicon Valley superstars tell us they have a gamechanger idea, we buy it without question. But when the same folks tell us their disruption must slowdown for the larger good of humanity – their intention raises a question mark. Can capitalist founders really an altruistic purpose beyond valuation? Tech stalwarts who spent years telling us that artificial intelligence (AI) would change everything are now telling us the pace is too dangerous.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has argued that the world needs to put the brakes on the AI development, OpenAI chief Sam Altman echoed the need for guardrails, and trillionaire Elon Musk endorsed the sentiment. On the face of it, it does suggest that the need for speed be replaced with the need for throttling back. But it may be premature to dismiss an ulterior motive behind these warnings.
Now all this comes in the backdrop of a number of events that have made headlines this year: OpenAI’s agents being involved in a cyberattack against Hugging Face by hacking their way through several secure systems; Anthropic’s Mythos demonstrating its capability of disrupting cybersecurity across critical infrastructure; and recent reports of Houthis vibe-coding attack........
