Bengaluru society refuses to refund security deposit to tenant, now asked to pay Rs 10,000 in compensation

Bengaluru: A Bengaluru tenant has emerged victorious in a legal tussle with a residential apartment association that refused to return his security deposit, with a consumer court condemning the group’s conduct as both unfair and deficient. The Bengaluru Urban II Additional District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission ordered the Neeladri Mahal Apartment-II Owners’ Association in Benson Town to repay Rs 5,000 with 8 per cent annual interest to Goutam Basu, a former tenant.

The court also directed the association to pay an additional Rs 10,000 in compensation for mental distress and legal expenses. Basu had resided in the apartment complex for three years before vacating the property in October 2024. Throughout his tenancy, he regularly paid monthly maintenance charges of Rs 3,967 and contributed Rs 900 to the building’s sinking fund.
