Red dragon turns blue: Amidst Trump’s tariffs, China reaches out to India; time for both to relook ties?
New Delhi: Global uncertainties are at an all time high since the re-election of US President Donald Trump. The latest in Trump’s escalatory tactics include imposing reciprocal tariffs on several countries. While the US has extended the deadline for reciprocal tariffs on Mexico and Canada till April 2, from the earlier deadline set at March 4, no such extensions have been issued for China.
In relation to this development, China has called on India to “take the lead in opposing hegemonism and power politics…Supporting, instead of wearing each other down, and strengthening cooperation.” “Making the dragon [China] and elephant [India] dance is the only right choice,” China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said.
If Asia’s two largest economies were to combine, the “democratisation of international relations and development and strengthening of ‘Global South’ will have a brighter future”, he added.
