Unexpected supernova remnants discovered in outskirts of neighbouring dwarf galaxy
New Delhi: Europe’s XMM-Newton telescope has discovered a pair of supernova remnants in the outskirts of the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small dwarf galaxy that is a satellite of the Milky Way. The instrument has picked up the shock of the violent death of a star, leaving a mark in the surrounding ionised gas. Scientists did not believe that the density of the gas would be so high at such a great distance from the core of the galaxy. The discovery has prompted researchers to re-evaluate their understanding of the Large Magellanic Cloud, which has higher levels of electrically charged gas than previously believed.
