Salamanders control blood flow to toes to enhance grip
New Delhi: During the filming of a documentary named The Americas, a salamander expert Christian Brown and the camera assistant William Goldenberg noticed blood rushing into the translucent toe tops of salamanders before they took a step. The creature was a wandering salamander that glide through the canopies of coastal redwood trees, and were known to have bright red ‘lakes’ of blood visible on their toes through their translucent skin. Scientists assumed that the blood helped with oxygenation, without evidence to support the claim. After the shoot, Brown asked Goldenberg if he was interested in using the film equipment to observe the salamander feet in a controlled environment.
