New Delhi: NASA astronaut Sunita Williams can be seen in the image above using a specialised device to measure the mass of the attached astronaut. The mechanism is a spring-based mass dampener, that cleverly uses Newton’s Second Law of Motion to determine the mass of an astronaut. According to the law, “The acceleration of an object depends on the mass of the object and the amount of force applied.” The mechanism applies a known force to the astronaut, and then measures the resulting acceleration to determine the mass of the astronaut.
