Opinion | PM Modi’s Mega Northeast & Bihar Push: Strengthening Connectivity & Economic Growth

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s five-state tour from September 13 to 15, 2025, is not just another political visit; it is a decisive demonstration of India’s developmental and strategic ambitions. With projects worth over Rs 71,850 crore, this tour will touch Mizoram, Manipur, Assam, West Bengal, and Bihar, weaving together a vision that blends infrastructure, connectivity, cultural revival, and national security.

This extensive itinerary showcases a calculated political and developmental roadmap, especially significant for the Northeast and Bihar, regions that have historically felt marginalised. Modi’s visit signals that these states are no longer at the periphery of India’s development discourse but central to the nation’s economic and geopolitical future.

Mizoram: Connecting The Unconnected

The tour began in Mizoram today, with a landmark step: connecting the state’s capital, Aizawl, to the national railway network for the first time through the Bairabi-Sairang rail line, built at a cost of Rs 8,070 crore. This project, which includes 45 tunnels and 143 bridges, is an engineering marvel given Mizoram’s challenging terrain.

For decades, Mizoram’s lack of direct rail connectivity hindered its economic integration with the rest of India. With this rail link, food grains, fertilisers, and essential goods will now reach Mizoram faster and at lower costs. Importantly, three new express trains, including a Rajdhani Express from Aizawl to Delhi, will significantly enhance the state’s accessibility to healthcare, education, and trade hubs.

This move also carries strategic importance. Mizoram shares borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, making it a key node in India’s Act East Policy and cross-border trade through projects like the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Corridor. Enhanced connectivity will bolster border security and economic resilience in this sensitive frontier region.
