The Bangladesh PM faces pressure from Jamaat, a weakening economy and strained India ties. A reset with New Delhi could offer a crucial political and economic opportunity

On August 5, an official event organised by Bangladesh’s acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmad to commemorate the July uprising spiralled with unprecedented ugliness. Unruly protests by Jamaat-NCP men broke out. Guests, including senior-most diplomats of different nations present at the programme, quietly got up and left. Indian high commissioner Dinesh Trivedi was among them.

Bangladesh had not seen this kind of a fiasco involving diplomats. The organisers later profusely apologised, but the chaos showed that the BNP was not in control.
