TEL AVIV — The United States and Iran are both claiming victory after agreeing to a two-week ceasefire on Tuesday night. Each has proposed their own peace plan, with diametrically opposed terms. Even so, it is clear that the United States has the upper hand, as the war has left the Islamic Republic a crippled shell of its former self.

Iran originally rejected the idea of a temporary ceasefire on Monday, prompting Trump to give an ultimatum: pause hostilities by Tuesday evening, or face the destruction of the country’s energy and transportation infrastructure. He promised that, without a ceasefire, a “whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.”

His bellicose rhetoric evidently persuaded Iranian officials, as the ceasefire was announced roughly 90 minutes before the given deadline. Pakistan was credited with brokering the deal, and Iranian and American delegations are expected to meet in Islamabad on Friday to begin negotiations for a longer-term settlement.
