As COP30 wraps up, the Carney government does not appear to be prioritizing climate action

The COP30 Global Climate Summit  in Belém, Brazil is scheduled to wrap up on Friday. It marks the 10th anniversary of the landmark Paris Accord where countries agreed to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, limiting global warming to 1.5 C above pre-industrial levels. 

Several Canadian ministers, led by Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin, have been in attendance for at least part of the summit. In a press release she stated: “Together with global partners, Canada is ensuring continued climate action with tangible outcomes toward a clean, sustainable, and equitable future for our communities.”

According to the latest Climate Action Tracker update, the world is now anticipated to heat up by 2.6C above preindustrial levels by the end of the century.

In Belém, the issues being addressed have — like previous COPs — included financing for poor countries from rich ones, strengthening countries’ emission reduction commitments to reach the 2050 1.5° targets and transitioning off fossil fuels.
