Dynamic Duos: From online storytelling to sharing a true White Lotus moment
In Dynamic Duos, Mumbrella each week asks two colleagues with a professional and personal affiliation to share with readers the importance of workplace relationships in an increasingly hybridised world of work.
Michelle Melky:
Hayley and I met through the web series community in Melbourne. We were both young producers who shared a common love – fangirling. We are seriously just insane fan girls. We have travelled overseas together — more than once — for the sake of a fandom. That sort of connection makes fast friends.
We ended up working together at a small production company in Melbourne, which is where we collaborated for the first time on the project – Love Songs. Love Songs was the world’s first Tiktok series and for us, a huge success. I started at Amplify in 2020 and then was lucky enough to have Hayley join the team in 2022.
I think Hayley and I keep being drawn towards each other because we care about the same things. We both love fandoms and online cultures. I’ve done probably the nerdiest things I’ve ever done with Hayley in tow. And we both really, really care about the work we do. Probably too much! When either one of us is having a hard day or we’re in a tough situation, we can call the other and work through it together.
Hayley is definitely the logical one between us and I’m the more emotional one. She’s all about process and problem solving and I’m usually stirring up problems to be solved! I think that’s why our partnership has worked. There’s a lot of balance in our skills and at the end of the day – a huge amount of trust. Trust that we’ll get the job done, but also we really trust and value each other’s opinions. That’s a pretty hard thing to find for two perfectionists like us.
