Drimonis: What is our immigration ‘capacity,’ anyway?

As the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump begins to revoke temporary protection status of 900,000 migrants granted under his predecessor, the Canadian border is now unsurprisingly seeing an uptick in asylum seekers.

As too often happens, powerful leaders make heartless political moves that force people fleeing humanitarian crises to pay a heavy price. Now the lives of these Venezuelans and Haitians have been plunged into chaos again.

It’s too soon to know whether we’ll see a long-term rise in asylum claims, but some Quebec politicians have already made it clear how they feel.

Immigration Minister Jean-François Roberge was heavily criticized last week about his stance, when he stated: “We can’t welcome all the world’s misery.” His choice of words angered Quebec’s sizable Haitian diaspora — and rightly so — one of the province’s biggest cultural communities.
