Hanes: Montreal Climate Summit will put the focus back on what may be the biggest threat of all

There are so many existential threats competing for our attention these days that it’s enough to make your head spin (or want to bury it in the sand).

There is the trade war launched by U.S President Donald Trump harming local industries, sowing economic uncertainty and sending markets into a tailspin. Then there are Trump’s threats of turning Canada into the 51st state.

Much of our bandwidth is monopolized by putting our “elbows up” to defend our country — and watching campaigning federal leaders duke it out over who is best to lead us through this turmoil.

But despite these significant distractions, there’s one existential menace we can’t afford to ignore: the climate emergency.

Tectonic shifts in the world’s political and economic order do not change the fact that the Earth is warming at a breakneck pace and the window of time to stave off catastrophe gets narrower by the day.

Yet since returning to power, Trump has jettisoned most U.S. climate policy. Even in Canada, one of Liberal Leader Mark Carney’s first acts as prime minister........
