If you want to look at how differently women and men spend money, look no further than Amazon co-founders Jeff Bezos and Mackenzie Scott. The pair used to be married – they split up in a $140bn divorce that left Scott initially the third-richest woman in the world. In the six years since their separation, Scott has quietly given away a “transformational” $19bn to more than 1,000 non-profits and charities, according to analysis from the Center for Effective Philanthropy. The same report states “it could take decades to truly understand the effects these gifts have had on… the sector at large”.

As for Bezos? Well, the man who allegedly makes millions every hour has said that he wants to give away most of his money but has yet to come within touching distance of his ex-wife. His splashiest foundation – the slightly sinisterly named Bezos Earth Fund – is committed to giving away $10bn to climate causes. So far, according to its website, it’s only granted........
