Have you noticed that over the past 10 or so years, films have become so dark. Not thematically – but quite literally. I can barely see what’s happening in some of the biggest blockbusters of the current era.
I’m also growing quite tired of haunting covers of 90s songs, the reimagined version of Nirvana’s hit Smells Like Teen Spirit featured in the opening credits of Black Widow being one such example.
Reddit user Prabu-Silitwangi agrees, asking users of the /r/Movies subreddit for their suggestions of a “trend in movies right now” they most want to “die a horrible death”. And it seems that the film industry needs to rethink a few things...
Lighting. We need lighting. PLEASE.
Any-difficulty-1247 says: “Please god, have them hire some lighting people and start shooting back on real places and not just in front of green screens.”
User Ratiocinor makes an interesting point, adding that if Titanic was made today, the chilling scenes of the ship breaking and sinking would be barely visible. In fact, half the movie would be too dark to see properly.
Reflecting on the 1997 flick, they say: “It’s so refreshing to be able to see everything that’s going on. They just play with the white balance and desaturate the colours and shift everything blue to trick your eyes into thinking it’s night time and dark. But everything is still well lit and easy to see.”
