You should keep copies of all records relating to your income tax returns for as long as they may be relevant to the IRS in determining how much tax you owe.

Q: How long do I need to store boxes of old bills, personal records and tax returns?

A: You should keep copies of all records relating to your income tax returns for as long as they may be relevant to the IRS in determining how much tax you owe.

The IRS generally has three years to assess additional tax. However, if more than 25% of your gross income is omitted from a return, then the IRS has six years to assess additional tax. If you failed to file a return, or if a return you filed was false, fraudulent or a willful attempt to evade tax, then there’s no limitation period at all.
