Steps to take if a neighbor's tree is in danger of falling on your house

You should consider offering to share the cost of removing an ailing tree if it is really that important to you.

Q: Our neighbor behind our house has a tree that is about 40 feet tall. While we enjoy watching birds in the tree, we are worried about its condition. It has many bare branches and few leaves. We live on a small Inner Loop lot in Houston. A big storm could knock the tree over, and it could potentially fall on our house. Should we send the homeowner a certified letter stating our concerns about the tree and how we would expect them to be held liable for any damage? What is the law on this matter?

A: First, you should talk to your neighbor. It might be the cost of removing the tree that is stopping them from removing it. You should consider offering to share the cost if it is really that........
