Our neighbor died. How can we keep squatters from taking over his home?

Neighbors worry squatters may take over late owner's vacant home.

Q: An elderly neighbor passed away over two years ago. He lived alone for many years, and I'm not sure if he had any relatives or a will. The next-door neighbor has taken it upon himself to keep the deceased's yard mowed to make it look like someone still lives there. What happens next? Is there anything a neighbor like myself can do to move things along before the house totally deteriorates and we have vagrants on the property?

A: If you or another neighbor has access to the house, or if you can somehow gain access, you may be able to search through the records of the deceased owner to try to find the names of any relatives.
