Does a move to cashless society harm low-income people?
There is no federal law that requires a business to accept cash. And as you might expect, neither the State of Texas nor any city in Texas has that type of law.
Q: I'm a nonprofit executive, and I'm both perplexed and disturbed by the growing phenomenon of businesses that don't accept cash, requiring instead that payment be made by credit and debit cards. Today, low-income earners are already marginalized by society, and now they're even worse off because of the "no cash accepted" business model. Can you help me reconcile this seeming contradiction between the words on our currency which read "This Note is Legal Tender for All Debts Public and Private" and the reality of current business practices?
