About to list your home for sale? Be careful about spending on repairs.
Q: My husband and I own a $600,000 home free and clear, and we intend to sell it this year. The home is in good condition but does need a few repairs and some interior paint and a lot of decluttering. We are considering a $50,000 home equity loan to pay for the cost of the repairs. Is that a crazy idea or not? We are both in our 70s, have few debts and live on pensions and social security. I know this is not a legal question, but I would be interested in your thoughts.
A: I would suggest you start preparing the home for sale by doing everything possible that does not cost money, or if it does cost money, then not a lot of money. If your home needs decluttering, do that first.
