Why are Texas Republicans spreading lies about cat-eating immigrants?

First, it was the "childless cat ladies" that were an issue for Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance. Now, he says it's immigrants in Ohio who are draining social services and eating cats.

It's not only beyond weird, it's a lie. And now even down-ballot Republicans in Houston are starting to repeat it.

City officials in Springfield, Ohio, have debunked stories about immigrants, particularly Haitians, abducting and eating pets. According to the Washington Post, Vance's baseless assertion that immigrants are hurting animals in Springfield is linked to a viral Facebook post claiming that someone's neighbor’s-daughter’s-friend found her lost cat hanging from a branch at a Haitian's home.

Police in Springfield have told the media that there are no reports of pets being stolen or eaten in........
