Houston's El Dorado Social Club celebrates 100 years as a respite for Black men

Every Thursday at sunset, the men of the El Dorado Social Club file into a two-story house in Third Ward.

Some settle into recliners in front of a large-screen TV to watch sports. Others are lured into the dining area by the aroma of dinner, complete with side dishes and desserts. Upstairs, some men play pool and poker, while several swap laughs by the bar, which is fully stocked with their favorites.

The men are often generations apart, some in their late 30s, others in their 80s and 90s. Prominent physicians, lawyers, government officials, business owners, professors, politicians, and executives make up this exclusive Black men's social club, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

With 64 members today, the El Dorado Social Club continues to provide a respite for Black men, a time to bond, swap life stories and find solace away from life's hustle. The club also hosts events like Thanksgiving dinners, holiday toy giveaways and an invitation-only ball, with a strict formal dress code.

Membership is by invitation. Because they are all highly accomplished in their professions, egos could clash easily. Not here; they check all........
