Scotland's Forests: targets, timber shortage, controversies. A new Herald series
Not since the 1980s, when a backlash began against the investor-led plantations of the era, has it seemed like there has been so much tension around forestry. Here is a sector relied on to achieve tree-planting targets but also the focus of public and campaigning criticism which has even seen its regulator taken to court.
That’s one of the reasons that we decided to make Scotland’s forests, our tree-planting targets and the timber that the forestry industry produces the centre of a short series.
So much seems to ride on getting where or how we plant our trees right. Trees are a key plank in our path to Net Zero. But in Scotland we are failing to meet........
