It has been a familiar sight for generations of visitors to the Clyde Valley, the distinctive black and white Tudor-style exterior of the Popinjay Hotel at Rosebank seared into the memories of berry pickers, wedding guests, walkers, anglers and day trippers alike.

Built in 1882, the landmark property in South Lanarkshire has faced difficult times in recent years with the impact of the coronavirus lockdowns, coupled with fire and flood damage.

Some feared that this might sound a death knell for the 34-bedroom hotel, yet a fortnight ago it was announced that the Popinjay has a new owner.

Bought by the Melville Hotels Group, it will become part of a seven-strong Scottish portfolio which also includes the Garth Hotel in Grantown-on-Spey, Grey Gull Hotel at Loch Fyne and the MacDonald Hotel in Kinlochleven.

So, what next for the Popinjay? Plans to develop the space with revamped restaurants, a bar area and lounge have already been unveiled, alongside ambitions to “put the hotel back to being the hub of the community.” A gym and pool are set to open soon.
