Roz Foyer: Dundee University's woes are just the tip of the iceberg

Dundee. It’s a city that’s had to remodel and rediscover itself several times. It is, after all, the city of discovery.

It’s a city steeped in trade union heritage, political activism and international solidarity. It was the first city ever to be twinned with a Palestinian city – being twinned with Nablus 45 years ago. It's a city that gave Churchill the boot. It’s the community that rallied around the workers of the Timex factory. It’s the people who reclaim the City Square at the Caird Hall for every cause and demonstration they seek to support.

Ourselves included; it’s a regular site for our annual Congress, the biggest gathering of trade unionists in Scotland. It’s a city of art, as the renowned Dundee School of Art celebrates nearly 140 years in the city. More recently, it’s became the hub of technological, scientific and medical brilliance at the city’s two universities.

Both Abertay and Dundee University welcome students from across the world to study at their institution. We should be proud of that. Without the same resources, infrastructure or, frankly, funding as Scotland’s metropolitans, Dundee rediscovered itself as a centre for learning and educational excellence. All of that is now at risk.
